half the sky
There is an amazing event happening next week and I cannot get it out of my mind. PBS is airing the documentary Half the Sky based on the tremendous book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.
I don’t really think that anything I could write here would be as powerful as the images from the documentary or the words from the book so I will acquiesce.
“So let us be clear about this up front: We hope to recruit you to join an incipient movement to emancipate women and fight global poverty by unlocking women’s power as economic catalysts. That is the process under way – not a drama of victimization but of empowerment, the kind that transforms bubbly teenage girls from brothel slaves into successful businesswomen.
This is a story of transformation. It is change that is already taking place, and change that can accelerate if you’ll just open up your heart and join in.”
I’m in. I am telling everyone I know about the film, its mission, and the ways we can change the world. I actually had a dream that I was taking part in one of their stories for another video- traveling to a part of the world where dreams seem like a luxury. Who knows, maybe there are even more ways I can help – I’ve got a passport and I’m great with directions. Give me a call Sheryl and Nicholas.
And I am again reminded of the hopeful power of film – especially a transmedia experience – to educate, inspire, and change the flipping world.
In closing, I wish you happy and safe moments with those you love. And if you have some time Monday or Tuesday, hop over to HalfTheSkyMovement.org.
